Ethernet cable for Xbox Live?

So I got Xbox Live today and a 50ft Ethernet cable to run it from my Xbox to my computer downstairs. It's all set up right, but the Xbox is saying it can't obtain the IP. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem? Do I have to manually input the IP, and if so then how?
